Hi everyone!
I wanted to email everyone about a new project I’m trying to get off the ground - melge magazine. I have worked with a lot of you in the past, and/or admired and respected your work a lot, and I wanted to invite all of you to be a part of it. I’ve mentioned this to some of you; some of you already know all about it and are already involved; some of you have no idea what the fuck I’m talking about. But I just wanted to send one email out to everyone with all the info.
SO, basically I’ve started a new tumblr blog, and I want it to be a group blog that will function as an online magazine featuring original creative content from a “collective” of comedians, writers, and visual artists living in New York. You can see it online at http://www.melge.com. I added and back-dated a bunch of posts I’ve made from other websites that might work as examples for the kind of content that would work for the site. Right now I’m just defining it as any content that you’ve created yourself (or with other members of melge) that can be considered art, OR an editorial piece ABOUT comedy, writing, visual art, etc. If you’ve seen The Daily What, that site puts out interesting content from all over the internet. What I’m envisioning is a site that’s like that (only all the content is completely original, created by those who run melge) mixed with McSweeneys Internet Tendency. We’d create a platform we can all use to get stuff we write, create, etc. out there in a professional context, and in a way that will hopefully draw a lot of followers due to the power of a collective over the individual. Also, I just think it’d be a lot of fun.
For those of you who have not already agreed to do this:
What do you think? Are you interested? Please email me back to let me know what all of your thoughts are.
For those of you who ARE interested in contributing:
If you have content that you’ve already posted on your own blog, or elsewhere, I would love it if you wanted to go through and also add it to melge, and just back-date the publishing date on melge, and this way, we can build up a lot of content from the past and when we have some sort of official launch, we’ll have a much stronger base to start from.
In general, anything you post elsewhere or on your own blog can also be posted on melge. Pieces don’t have to be exclusive to melge. Also, your name will be listed under the “contributors” list on the sidebar, and your name and photo will be attached to anything you post, and will link to your own personal website/tumblr. So the more readers this site gets, the more readers you’ll get too.
If you post a photo, video, drawing, etc., you should add some sort of statement to give context and introduce readers to the piece.
Also, I don’t think there will be much of an editorial process in general, but for now, so that we can make sure to collectively define some sense of what makes something fit (or not fit) as content for melge, I’d appreciate it if you saved posts as drafts so I can just look at them before publishing. I think it will take a bit of time for us to find some sense of style for the kind of stuff that goes on the site, and I’d like for that to happen behind the scenes. In the same vein, I’ll probably end up taking some of my own posts off the site once we add more content to make sure that it fits too.
So what does everyone think? I would love to hear from all of you. If you’re in, let me know so I can send you an individualized link to give you access to the blog. I would also love it if any of you have any feedback on what my thoughts are so far, or any ideas for the future! If you think some part of this plan totally sucks, I’d like to know that too. I’ve written this to all of you because I have a lot of respect for all of your work, and of course this means I have the same respect for your opinions as well.
All the best
Darren
